Burlap, Animal Print, & Ruffles

I am really excited about my newest D.I.Y. I was at the Dollar General, after dropping the kids off at school, just browsing around. I had to pick up boring stuff like toothbrushes or something like that and low and behold I saw the clearance aisle in the back. There sat stacked were 3 lonely animal print shades. I  have been wanting to make shade slipcovers so I bought them, thinking they were 1/2 price. Don't you just love it when you get to the register and they say it is another 50% off the sale price! So, they were $1.86 each. How I was wishing there were more.

This is what they looked like before.

This is what it looks like after. I just love the simplicity of burlap. The ruffles make it more elegant and fun.

I added some jute rope trim to the top.

By leaving the animal print underneath, there is a playful print when the light is on.

ok, not the best pic! Sorry, about that. I just wanted to show how it looks lit.

I don't know yet where I will use this, but I will finish the other shade the same way, so I will have two. My whole house is getting a makeover, so there's no telling where they will end up. When I figure it out, I will let you know.

I will also post the tutorial for this, soon. I was just so excited about this, that I had to share!

Happy making!

Easy Faux Zinc Table

Been to Restoration Hardware, lately?
Have you seen their zinc tables? They are really cool, but pricey.

I wanted to make my own, since buying one just isn't an option as a SAHM and a firefighter's wife. I have a hard time going into retail shops without thinking, "I can make that and for a lot less." While I can't weld a zinc table myself, I thought that I could paint something to look like zinc. So, I found some inspiration on Pinterest:

Then, I researched online, how to get "the look" from sources like sugarandcharm  and freckled laundry
Looked achievable and I already had most of the supplies on hand.  I have a table behind my sofa I chose to refinish in "zinc."

I gathered my supplies:

1.) 150 grit sand paper

2.) quart of black 2n1 primer + paint in satin (I used Glidden brand at Walmart)

3.) 2oz Folk Art Metallic Pearl White acrylic paint (Walmart) x2

4.) 2" paint brush

5.) paper plate (to put the acrylic paint while you paint)

6.) finishing nails  (short nails with small heads)

7.) hammer

So, this is how my table looked in the beginning:

I purchased this table at Target a couple years ago.
It was a dark wood with a brushed nickel knob. So-so looking, but I liked the shape and it worked well behind my sofa. always meant to paint it, but never found the right color....till now.

Step by Step:

1.) Wipe down with damp cloth.

2.) Let dry.

3.) Lightly sand.

4.) Wipe off.

5.) Apply 2 coats of the black paint as a base color.

Here is what it looks like after those steps.
(Excuse the hideous recliner in the background! My husband refuses to part with it till I find a replacement. Where does one find a shabby chic recliner?!)

6.) Load a clean paint brush with metallic pearl white paint and "pounce" (bounce brush up & down off surface) Work in small sections.

7.) Rub the brush in same area in circular motion to blend the paint. You want to achieve a metal surface look. No brush strokes.

Work your way all over the table until you cover the what you want, whether it's just the top, the bottom, or like me, the whole thing. Add as many coats of the pearl until you achieve the depth and look you desire. Some black should show through.

8. ) Now, add the nails. I added them around the top edge and on top of the legs.

9.) lightly brush the nail heads with the pearl paint to blend them in with the rest of the "zinc" table

You're done. That's it. 9 steps. Cool, huh?!

and the reveal........

you should end up with something that looks like this:

This is a closer view of the finish and the nailhead detail.

I am so happy I painted this sofa table! The "zinc" looks nice up against my leather sofa.

I hope this inspires and motivates you to "zinctify" a piece of furniture. Or even a mirror frame. Or how about a tray? If you do, I would love for you to share your piece here with me.
Happy making!

Treasure Hunting

I love to go hunting for treasure, the kind I can decorate my home with. I found some really cool things at the Front Porch of the South. This one of the cool place in Columbus, Ga to find vintage pieces for a good price. The Attic is another favorite of mine.
I haven't had the energy on Saturday mornings to get out to yard sales (where I find the BEST deals) and I needed to restock for my upcoming show in Atlanta at the Girls Love to Shop Show at Cobb Galleria, September 16 & 17, so I walked through the many isles of Front Porch (there are over 300 vendors!) and found these awesome pieces.

I love the chippy red paint on that crate! I also found a vintage seltzer dispenser made in Belgium for a NY company, a collection of vintage Elf on the Shelf, wire basket, and an awesome adding machine crate.

Check out the typography on this crate. I have been eyeing this crate since Front Porch opened a couple months ago. It was $22.00. I kept saying, "If it's still here next time, I will get it." Well, after 4 trips, I did. I am really excited to repurpose it, but I may find it hard to part with and sell!

I went to Indiana 3 weeks ago and found this stacking basket with handle and had to have it. I have never seen one like it. I love baskets. I will probably use it for a sewing basket. I also found a vintage whale shaped wood cutting board! I forgot to take a pic of  it, though!

Oh, that's my little dachshund, Emo! I just noticed him in the pic.

Today, I am heading to the Attic on Hamilton Rd. in Columbus, Ga to see what I can find and see my good friend, Caroline who has a great booth up there. I will post my finds here and on twitter. If you would like to follow me on twitter, my name on there is : pammakesthings

Take care!

Shopping for a Mac and DSLR

Ok, so I am about to make a two big investments for my little business, Southern Domestica. I want to purchase a Macbook and Nikon DSLR.
I have been using a Dell that is from 2007, I think. Anyway, I think it is time to get something new, don't you? Well, I have to be able to use this new computer for my Etsy shop and two blogs, daily. I need plenty of storage for pics, docs, and programs and super fast speed in my new Macbook. I don't know about you, but I can't stand how long I have to wait for my dinosaur to load the internet! Well, Mac users swear Mac is the way to go, but I am not quite sure why. I have heard that viruses aren't made to attack Macs, normally, so they are safer. That sounds good. I know they look cool with their sleek thin design. The screens are like glass. I wonder if they have a lot of glare? I didn't notice that. I should have paid more attention to that.
I consider myself pretty PC proficient, but I still don't understand the Geek ( I mean that in an ever-so 'I wish I was a Best Buy geek, right now way') lingo when it comes to Intel processors, Thunderbolt and Flash storage.
So, if any of you have any advice about Macs, I would appreciate your wisdom and feedback. I am trying to figure out which Mac is right for what I need and want to understand the lingo more. Please, help because it is a major expense and I don't want to get it wrong.

I am also shopping for a DSLR camera. My photographer friends love Nikon. I am an amateur photog, myself. I used to love to snap photos for fun, years ago, but then my vintage film camera went kaput and I never replaced it. So, I want to use my new camera for my business and for fun. I will be taking product images, as well as landscape and action pics. I will need pics for my blog about the South and Etsy. I hope to capture scenery, people, & products. I want to be able to manipulate my photos. I currently use a Sony Cybershot, which I like a lot, but I need something more. So, if any of you have any advice about which DSLR you like, I would like to know.
I am sorry this isn't the prettiest or even informative post for you. I do value your opinion and I need some advice on these purchases. I promise to post something cool soon. I have a roman shade tutorial to share this week.

I look forward to your feedback!
